We currently make a few different types of flutes
In a few different keys
(We will expand our selection in the future, check back!)
Our primary focus is making drone flutes
It’s our deepest passion, the sound is the most magical, and the musical possibilities are endless with these flutes
Each flute is unique
Below are examples of the flute types we make, but each flute will vary by the wood it’s made from, and the stone inlays we use on each flute
Drone — Key of F#
We recommend people start with an F# midrange flute, either a drone or single. These have a lovely versatile sound are are playable by all hand sizes.
F# is said to be the most common of all native American style flute keys. This key allows for smaller holes and closer hole distances, making it easy to play. This is an absolutely excellent flute to start with if you're not used to playing the wooden flute. It’s an accessible drone flute for anyone.
It is a really nice middle tone along the range of instrument keys. It's not too high pitched, nor is it a deep bass flute, a very balanced pitch / tone that plays really well either solo or with other instruments. The perfect tone that sings clearly, yet also has some of the rich lower tones too. The F note is also related to the heart chakra, and this is certainly felt with these flutes.
Note — The F# single flutes are exactly the same as the F# drone flutes as far as hole placement and ease of playing.
Drone — Key of low D
Our low D flute is much deeper and has a lower sound than many flutes. It has an absolutely beautiful and powerful tone, and is more appropriate for sound healing or ceremony style playing.
It's not quite a bass flute, but it's not too far off either. The key of D plays easily with many other instruments.
These flutes are heavier and notably larger compared with a more standard sized drone flute. These flutes are no small thing! A sacred instrument that creates soulful sounds.
We are able to create unique, rhythmic, and percussive sounds with these larger flutes as well. They have more air volume which allows for different types of sounds.
This flute key has larger holes and hold spacing, meaning that this flute is more challenging to play, especially for people with moderate to smaller sized hands. We generally don’t recommend this flute for smaller handed people or beginner flute players, instead go for the F# flutes!
Single — Key of F#
The standard single chambered native American flute
Great flute to start with and a bit more affordable
Easy to play, smaller hole spacing than the larger flutes
Lightweight and smaller for travel
Doesn’t have the awesome drone sound… but sometime that isn’t needed or wanted! Listen to the videos below to hear the difference

General Information about Heart Radiance Flutes
How to choose the right kind of flute
Each key, or tone, has its own unique qualities and energy, and we play them for different purposes.
We recommend people start with an F# midrange flute, either a drone or single. These have a balanced sound and are playable by all hand sizes. The larger D drone flutes are challenging for smaller hands to play.
440 Hz
Tuning
Each Heart Radiance Flute is tuned to 440 Hz, the modern standard. We do this so it may harmonize beautifully with other instruments you may wish to play with. Some flutes are tuned to 332 Hz, some people feel this is a more natural tone, but we don’t experience this to be true; frequencies exist on a wide spectrum and all have their place. We choose 440 Hz for the ability to create music more easily with others.
Easy to play and it all sounds good!
The sound of the Native American-style flute is deeply rooted in the minor pentatonic scale. This gives the flute its distinct, soulful, and beautiful healing sounds. One of the gifts of this scale is that every note harmonizes and sounds good together, there are no “wrong notes,” making this flute accessible to players of all experience levels. Our flutes are not only easy to play, but is also imbued with a deep, calming, and healing energy, making it a powerful ally for meditation, sound healing, and expressing the heart.
Crushed
stone
inlays
Embedded in the body of each flute are crushed stone inlays, chosen and arranged uniquely for every flute, no two are the same. These are more than decorations, they are vibrational elements of the Earth, each one imbuing healing frequencies into your flute. Precious stones have long been honored for their healing properties and capacity of harmonizing frequencies.
Care and Maintenance of your Flute
To ensure the longevity and vibrant sound of your Heart Radiance flute, please take a moment to read this care guide. It will help you maintain and protect your flute for a lifetime!
-
The main body of your flute is made from a softer tone wood that is delicate. Though it is sturdy, please handle your flute with care as this wood is soft and will dent if handled too roughly. Avoid dropping it or applying excessive pressure to the body, and remember that the wood is soft and may show wear with time, this is a natural part of the flute’s journey. However the top and bottom (on many of our flutes) are a harder and more durable wood and resist damage much better. And the cap on top is also very solid too, which is tied onto the flute with real leather deer hide straps.
-
Our flutes are finished with a very durable and protective poly-oil that will protect the flute for its lifetime without the need for any maintenance. There’s no need to reapply any products to the flute ever, simply enjoy the music and trust that the finish will protect the wood. If many years go by and you feel it could really use a new coat, please reach out to us for more details. We love to keep things as natural and simple as possible, and this is the best, simple, protective, and maintenance free finish we have found.
-
Over time, you may need to occasionally tighten or retie the leather straps that hold the top block in place as the leather continues to stretch over time (see the intro flute course video for details).
-
Download our ‘Care and Maintenance’ document for a visual aid.
The top block is a crucial component of the flute, as it channels the air and creates the beautiful, unique sound. It’s important to ensure that this block remains aligned with the body of the flute. The block may shift slightly as you carry the flute, as it is only secured by the leather straps. Before playing, gently check that the block is properly aligned with the flute’s wall to ensure the best sound.
-
When playing your flute, moisture from your breath is a natural part of the process. Occasionally, this moisture may accumulate in the air channel (especially in humid environments), obstructing the sound. If this happens, simply give the flute a strong blow in the slit at the top cap (see the download), and give your flute some really solid downward flicks (without letting go!!!) to expel any moisture. It’s a good practice to do this after every playing session to keep the flute clear and functioning properly, and so it never rests with excess moisture inside it.
-
Extreme temperatures can damage the wood, so please avoid leaving your flute in a hot environment such as a car, as heat can warp and crack the wood. Cold weather is far less of a concern, but still don’t keep it in prolonged cold weather either, when possible. Also be mindful of extremely dry conditions, which can cause the wood to dry out and become damaged. Your flute will thrive best in a temperate, balanced environment.
-
When you’re not playing your flute, store it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can damage the wood and affect the flute’s tone. Always store your flute safely, ensuring it won’t get knocked over or scratched.
-
When playing your flute we typically recommend holding it in the air rather than setting it down on your leg or the ground. This greatly obstructs the sound quality and it isn’t designed to be played this way. And yet… in truth when we play the larger heavier flutes, we often rest them just slightly on our leg, but ensure the bottom isn’t totally obstructed or the sound will not be as good!

Deeper Intentions Behind
Heart Radiance Flutes
Sacred instrument allies for heart expression & healing
✦
Music medicine
✦
Deeper connection to life
Flutes are made from wood, the precious body of trees, and trees create life by allowing us to breathe. Breath is aliveness, it is connection to creation, it is the energy that infuses life-force into all things.
When we play the wooden flute, we infuse our life giving breath into this vessel of expression. Our focused and channeled energy causes vibrations to ripple outwards into the world, resonating upon the fabric of the universe and influencing our lives.
Not only beautiful instruments,
wooden flutes are tools for healing
Sound amplifies and emanates our intentions, whatever frequency one is currently expressing, this is broadcast so much more powerfully when paired with woodwind instruments and breath energy
This is the art of sacred music medicine
The deepest intentions for our flutes are for them to be an invitation to create change and healing in your life by this beautiful connection with sound healing. This is musical magical manifestation. Perhaps we sit in daily meditation by sending a little prayer of love and healing with a flute song, casting healing vibrations into the world. We become a clear channel for life to express through us, let the flute play you!
We dream to bring as much love and connection and personal relationship with creation as possible, and our flutes are one way we intend to do this.
